Factory planning for water bottling projects
Treat wastewater as a defined plant system
A water bottling plant can release treatment reject, backwash, cleaning solutions, rinsing water, product losses, utility condensate, floor wash and domestic wastewater. These streams differ in flow, quality, temperature, chemicals and local acceptance. A responsible project identifies each source, separates incompatible or special streams, provides qualified local designers with real inputs and creates an operating record instead of assuming that clean-looking water can enter any drain.

01
Capture routine, cleaning, maintenance and abnormal releases before selecting a treatment concept.
List filter backwash, membrane reject, flushing, sanitizing and preservation solutions, tank drains and sampling. Record source-water variability, expected operating sequence and any chemicals that affect the stream.
Include bottle rinse, filler and tank cleaning, line sanitation, product change or startup loss, laboratory waste and floor cleaning. Distinguish normal diluted water from concentrated first rinse or chemical solution.
Identify compressor condensate, cooling-system blowdown, boiler or hot-water releases where present, domestic flow, stormwater and accidental spills. Keep flows with different handling requirements visible.
02
The project needs a transparent basis for local review and equipment sizing.
| Stream group | Data to record | Decision needed | Evidence source |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-volume process water | Peak and daily flow, solids and chemistry | Recovery, equalization, treatment or discharge | Supplier cycles and measured trials |
| Chemical cleaning solution | Chemical, concentration, pH, temperature and volume | Segregation, neutralization and controlled release | Cleaning procedure and safety data |
| Oil-bearing condensate | Compressor type, oil risk and volume | Collection, separation and approved disposal | Utility equipment documentation |
| Domestic and storm flows | Occupancy, rainfall and site routes | Separate approved systems and overflow control | Local building and site design |
03
Final wastewater design must follow site conditions and applicable local requirements.
Coordinate floor drains, channels, buried routes, sumps, tanks, transfer pumps, access and spill containment. Check simultaneous peaks and failure modes, not only an average daily total.
Qualified specialists should evaluate screening, settling, oil separation, pH control, biological or other treatment only after flow and quality evidence are available. Avoid selecting a package by plant BPH alone.
Name who samples, designs, supplies, installs, commissions, monitors and communicates with local authorities or service providers. Record discharge points, conditions and exclusions in the responsibility matrix.
04
A wastewater system must work during the plant events that create its highest risk.
Observe representative production, backwash and cleaning releases; verify routes, pumps, level controls, alarms, dosing, containment, sampling access and safe response to a stopped pump or blocked route.
Define parameters, methods, sampling locations, frequency, records, instrument checks and response limits using the approved local basis. Link unusual results to production and chemical-use records.
Review wastewater impact when raw water, treatment recovery, cleaning chemicals, production schedule, packaging equipment or building drainage changes. Keep flow diagrams and source registers current.
Buyer questions
The required approach depends on stream quality, flow, available receiving systems and local rules. The project needs local review using actual source data.
A defined reuse may be feasible after quality, storage, treatment, cross-connection, operating reliability and local acceptance are assessed.
Not by assumption. Oil risk and the selected compressor and condensate-treatment system must be evaluated and assigned an approved destination.
Provide the source register, flow scenarios, water and stream analyses, chemicals, cleaning cycles, site layout, elevations, receiving boundary, monitoring needs and local discharge basis.
