Handover makes the plant operable by the local team

Turn Commissioning Knowledge Into an Operating Handover

A running trial is not a complete handover unless the people, documents, parts, open actions and operating boundaries are understood locally.

01

Train by role and task

Different plant roles need different depth and evidence of participation.

Operators

Startup, shutdown, normal running, replenishment, checks, cleaning, alarms and safe response.

Maintenance

Inspection, lubrication, adjustments, change parts, fault finding, isolation and parts identification.

Quality team

Sampling, process checks, container/closure checks, records and escalation of nonconforming results.

Supervisors

Operating limits, change control, performance records, shift handover and ownership of open actions.

02

Assemble a usable handover pack

Documents should match the supplied scope and the final installed condition.

Approved project documents

Final equipment list, layouts, utility inputs, technical agreements and accepted changes.

Operation and maintenance

Manuals, schedules, procedures, parts lists and supplier contact paths.

Commissioning records

Tests, settings where agreed, quality observations, corrections and acceptance/open-item records.

Training records

Topics, attendees, dates, language, trainer and any further training actions.

03

Control the transition to production

The project team should know what is accepted, restricted, open and transferred.

Operating boundary

State the approved product, format, configuration and conditions demonstrated at handover.

Open-item control

Assign completion dates, interim operating controls and closure evidence.

Spare parts and tools

Verify quantity, identity, storage and the relationship to maintenance tasks.

Support route

Confirm how future technical questions, service requests and order-scope matters will be communicated.

Buyer questions

Questions to settle before the next project gate

Is one day of operator training enough?

Training duration and depth depend on line scope, team experience, formats and the demonstrated tasks. Define the required competencies in the project plan.

Should training happen before commissioning?

Orientation can begin earlier, but practical training should follow the safe startup sequence and use the final installed equipment.

What happens to unresolved items at handover?

They should remain on a controlled list with owners, target dates, impact and agreed closure evidence.
