Connect new work without losing control of the operating plant

Water Bottling Plant Shutdown and Tie-In Planning

An expansion can require new piping, power, controls, conveyors, utilities, walls or production equipment to connect to a working factory. Shutdown planning defines what must stop, what can remain live, how conditions are verified, who controls each interface and what evidence is required before normal production restarts.

01

Survey the installed plant before designing the tie-in

Existing drawings are a starting point, not proof of the current condition.

Physical survey

Measure equipment, pipes, cables, panels, drains, structures, doors, columns, access and lifting routes. Record tags, materials, elevations, connection details and maintenance clearance.

Operating survey

Document products, schedules, cleaning windows, utility peaks, current bottlenecks, quality controls, maintenance history and which functions must continue during construction.

Document reconciliation

Compare field findings with drawings, programs, utility schedules and asset records. Mark unknown or inaccessible interfaces for controlled confirmation before fabrication.

02

Classify every tie-in and isolation

The work package follows energy, hygiene and production consequence.

03

Build the shutdown around executable work packs

A calendar duration is credible only when access, people, materials and decisions are ready.

Pre-shutdown work

Complete fabrication, software preparation, staging, permits, risk reviews, samples, lifting plans, temporary barriers and as much offline testing as practical before production stops.

Shutdown sequence

Define safe stop, product removal, cleaning, isolation, verification, demolition, installation, inspection, testing and handback steps with named owners and hold points.

Contingency and rollback

Identify critical parts, alternate connection methods, repair resources, decision deadlines, temporary operation and the conditions that trigger restoration of the original system.

04

Restart by controlled gates

Mechanical completion alone does not release an expanded plant to saleable production.

Static and utility checks

Verify construction completion, guards, labels, torque or inspection records, leak tests, electrical checks, utilities, drains, software versions, interlocks and safe access.

Cleaning and quality release

Complete the approved cleaning or sanitation method, inspect the affected boundary, verify relevant quality conditions and document authorization for product introduction.

Production ramp-up

Test dry operation, water or product operation, connected line behavior, changeovers and defined performance. Track open actions and confirm which limits remain temporary.

Buyer questions

Questions to settle before the next project gate

How long should an expansion shutdown take?

There is no reliable generic duration. It follows the number and condition of interfaces, isolation, access, fabrication readiness, local work, testing, cleaning and contingency.

Can installation happen while the old line keeps running?

Some separated work may proceed, but the boundaries, dust and hygiene controls, traffic, energy isolation and emergency access must be assessed for the actual operating site.

What should be frozen before the shutdown?

Freeze surveyed connection data, work scope, drawings, materials, software changes, roles, permits, isolation, test methods, acceptance, cleaning, restart and contingency decisions.

Who authorizes restart?

The site should assign qualified production, quality, safety and technical roles to confirm their gate evidence under the approved plan and applicable local requirements.
